How to Sweat Out the Small Stuff Block Island Style

I spent 5 days on Block Island. It small island off the coast of Rhode Island. And Mr. SOTSS’s daughter K-Corn (my nickname for her) drew it so accurately here. It kinda looks like a duck.block-island-chalk

We were there to celebrate Mr. SOTSS’s dad’s 70th birthday and the 4th of July.

The one thing I can say for certain is that there are no bad views anywhere.

There is only beauty out of each and every vista.

I would go for walks and take in the view only to turn around and see something even more beautiful.

So I figured since this blog is supposed to be about running and stress relief (and doing any exercise that makes you feel less stress really especially when unable to run) I would design this post to highlight that stuff. More »

I’m so sorry to have disappeared from blogging for the last 10 days. I was under the gun to get work done before going away on vacation and then was away with limited wifi for 5 days. If you ever want to see what I’m up to I’m ALWAYS posting on Instagram. For some reason that’s just the easiest social media channel for me. Pictures come easier than words for me. 🙂

I just got home from Block Island (an island off the coast of Rhode Island here on the East Coast) and have to unpack and dive back into some major work projects so this will just be a short post.

I took my bike on vacation and enjoyed cruisin' around the island with iced coffee in tow. Didn't keep track of mileage or speed. Just inhaled and exhaled :)

I haven’t even shared the news that I started physical therapy for my toe! After having the set back a month ago I kept thinking i’d bounce back quicker this time around but it became apparent that my body really needed a push. Due to insurance/referral/authorization stuff I’ve only had one appointment so far but hopefully I’ll start going twice a week starting next week. The PT said the pain is coming from my bone and not my ligament. He feels confident we can mitigate the pain and also work on exercises to get my balance back and my normal gait back so my compensation aches will go away. I trust him because he helped me with my ankle tendonitis twice!

Block Island was stunning! I was there 2 summers ago for Mr. SOTSS’ dad’s wedding and this time around was to celebrate his dad’s 70th birthday. Living in the Northeast I’m lucky to be able to spend time at so many beach towns but this island is special. It’s so beautiful. It didn’t hurt that the house we were staying in had access to this large pond and we were able to go kayaking right from the dock in the backyard. IMG_1169It also gave me the perfect vantage point for sunrise. IMG_1166And there were hydrangeas at every turn…IMG_1017

I’ll be back soon to tell you more about physical therapy and Block Island.

In the meantime can you fill me in on what’s been going on with you?

What’s your favorite flower?

Woah! How is it 6 days into the new year already? Let’s catch up! How did you ring in the new year? Anything new and exciting planned for 2016?

So the good news is I have managed to break my 10-cookie-a-day-habit but I have been satisfying my sweet tooth with these candy canes I got on the half price rack after Christmas 🙂

IMG_0211Let’s face it—I have no expectation that my sweet tooth will just disappear for 2016 so I’ll do what I can to keep it under control.

I got a new couch and it comes with a classic Sally story. So last Tuesday I met some of my high school alumni at a local bar for our annual holiday get together. It’s always fun to catch up although we keep in touch on Facebook too. I spent 4+ hours there and it was after midnight when I got home. I was expecting my new sofa to be delivered between 6:30-9:30am the following day and knew I needed to get my existing furniture out to the curb. I couldn’t exactly call someone in the middle of the night. Mr. SOTSS’s suggestion was for me to just move my existing furniture into the dining room until he was able to get over to help but I’m stubborn and a little too type A to be able to handle having the old stuff lingering for a day or more. So I just hauled a$$ and got-er-done but I took out chunks of sheetrock, pulled some muscles and bruised myself along the way.

All because I was too stubborn to wait 12 hours!

But I did it! #stronglikebull #stubbornasamule

There was even a moment that the love seat was literally wedged in the staircase and I couldn’t budge it loose. I almost fell apart and cried but I pulled myself together and slithered under the railing to get beneath and jiggle the love seat free. While I’m still sore and bruised a week later, it was worth it.

And the new sofa? I love it!

IMG_0111It’s big enough for Mr. SOTSS, me and BOTH dogs. This was very important to me since Chester is a big boy and hasn’t been able to fit on the sofa with us without being a “lap” dog =)

we ALL fit!

So I thought it would be fun to go month by month and share my most memorable moments of 2015. They won’t all be running related but I’m sure you don’t mind. Gonna go in reverse and start with December first so that I can tell you all about my New Year’s Eve:

DECEMBER 31—New Year’s Eve/Day

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

I spent the afternoon strolling the outlet stores with Mr. SOTSS, his girls and his mom too! We then picked up some groceries at the supermarket for dinner. The girls and I took on the important responsibility of picking out ice cream flavors and before you knew it we had whipped cream, chocolate chips, sprinkles and chocolate syrup! If there’s one thing I know it’s that you need to make ice cream sundae’s to ring in the new year. Mr. SOTSS’ mom cooked an amazing dinner (his aunt and uncle joined us for dinner too!). We then put on our party hats and waited patiently for midnight. The girls played chess and then joined me in working on one of the jigsaw puzzles that I bought them for Christmas.

I’m home from the most fabulous weekend and reality has set in…I won’t see Mr. SOTSS for 8 days 🙁 We usually try not to let more than 4 days go by without seeing each other but he’s on the second leg of his vacation with his girls and I will gladly accept this challenge =)

Last I left you I was headed to the wedding.

I've been into this pose lately mainly because it makes me look about 10 lbs thinner =)

The views from the ceremony site were amazing.

I know this sand thing is popular at weddings but it really worked for this beachy wedding.

The weather was perfect. The food was delicious. I got to meet Mr. SOTSS’s sister and her beau who were so sweet, and I took a ton of photos too. You know me—always behind the lens. I’m actually thinking about doing something a little more substantial with my photography. Not sure yet but it brings me so much joy. It’s like I run marathons to get to the heart of my running passion. So now I need to do something big with the photography. I dunno. Maybe travel the country and document each state. But I digress. Oh, I got to share a lovely slow dance with Mr. SOTSS while the girls were busy playing hide and seek with the other grand kids. It was probably one of my most treasured moments of the weekend.

After the wedding we took the kids to the beach and eventually we ended up back on that glorious porch of the Inn and ate pizza and played games.

Yesterday we were on the 10am ferry back to Connecticut. I went to wait for my train back home and Mr. SOTSS and the girls headed north for the second leg of their vacay. I was proud of myself for not crying when I kissed Mr. SOTSS goodbye but within 10 minutes of sitting at the station the waterworks began. What can I say, I’m just a crier. But I had my laptop and plenty of work to catch up on, and these very important snacks cheered me right up:

With so much time to kill i decided a little vanilla chip ice cream with Reese’s Pieces would be a perfect lunch.

Trains aren't a bad way to travel except when you have a tight hamstring and a headache. LONGEST TRIP EVER!

10 hours later I made it back to my brother’s house where Duncan had been crashing. He was mostly a good boy but my sister-in-law told me he swiped a piece of buttered bread right out of her mom’s hand. Little rascal! It felt good to be reunited with my muppet head.

Today I worked on my freelance work for 6 hours straight not stepping away from the laptop except to walk the dog and eat a little something. But finally about 5 in the evening I reached a stopping point, so I set out for a run. I’m actually lucky I ran later in the day because the humidity seemed to have dissipated and it was a much more comfortable run. So the tweaked hammy from my cartwheel incident the other day seems to be getting better. It doesn’t bother me at all now while running. I’ve got my normal stride back and don’t need to shuffle but afterward it’s super tight and I’m just going to foam roll and stretch like a beast.

Tomorrow it’s back to work in the city. Back to life….back to reality.

How was your weekend?

Do you like to match your running shoes and outfits?
