Part 3: the miles continue….first with the driving miles.

We checked out of our cute hotel at Pismo Beach in the late morning and had a 3+ hour drive to Los Angeles. As we approached lunchtime, we were in the Ventura, CA area. We took a leap of faith, exited and found a nifty restaurant (attached to an inn) called the Vagabond. After reading a framed news article hanging on the wall, we realized the establishment had been in business for over 45 years and owned by the same woman. Seriously, the décor was probably original to the grand opening. But the food was so good! I had the best B. A. (avocado) L. T. ever!

Don't let the 45 year old décor fool ya!

After a few million hundred more miles, we had finally arrived in swanky LA! We checked into the Kimpton Palomar hotel on Wilshire Blvd. They had lots of nice touches, including games to play in the lobby (Jenga anyone?!), free wine and sangria from 5-6pm each evening in the lobby as well, and they are also pet-friendly which made my lobby sangria sipping even more lovely. I was missing Duncan so I enjoyed the dynamic doggie duo sitting across from me.

Lobby fun!

I knew this place was a perfect fit when I saw they had a jogging map in each room for their guests.

They know me so well!

They know me so well!

I used the map loosely but didn’t follow any of their suggested routes exactly. I noticed that U.C.L.A. was just up the block. So the next morning I made that my destination. I was also on the hunt for a Starbucks or some other place that Lisa and I could grab some breakfast on the cheap. (We ended up splurging for $22 pancakes with the hotel room service the next day and it was awful). That’s another great thing about running on vacation: It’s a practical way to scope out the area. Especially in LA where parking can be pricey and traffic can be brutal. And yes, my mission was accomplished. My idea that a college campus and large medical center would surely have a Starbucks or supermarket nearby was a smart one. So that’s my W.O.W. here. Save gas and aggravation and scope out your destination by foot first. I ran about 2 miles before having to stop to take a quick phone call. It was important. Once the call was over I ran an extra mile (forgot to document it with my Garmin 🙁 #fail!) Then walked back to the Starbucks with Lisa for breakfast. I’m guessing it was 4 miles in total.

I hadn’t planned on running for the duration of the trip but on the last day (especially when I thought about all those hours I’d be sitting on the plane) I decided to try and squeeze in another 3 or 4 miles. I ventured in the opposite direction from my previous run and toured the local residential streets off of Wilshire Blvd. I kept thinking of the 90s TV show Melrose Place. Before I knew it I ran past the Beverly Hills Country Club and made a decision to turn back at the famed Beverly Hilton (RIP Whitney!). It was in the mid 70s but felt so hot because of the strong sun I suppose. And while I wasn’t expecting it, the route ended up quite hilly. I was impressed with all the curb appeal. Beautiful landscaping and flowers. Only 2 problems with that. One was that there was a certain type of tree or bloom that had a foul smell (think NYC subway in the middle of August). It was quite stinky and sort of ruined the whole “I’m on vacation and running in beautiful Los Angeles” feeling. The other was that all of these glamorous landscape were in the midst of being coiffed by the landscapers. I learned that they are SERIOUS about their work there and don’t stop what they are doing for silly little vacationing runners like me. Before you know it i had leaf blower schmutz all over my sweaty self. I was sandblasted with soil and grass clippings. I got over that quick when I returned to my beloved hotel where there was strawberry infused water waiting for me in the lobby.

Vacation had come to a close. I shoved my sweaty running gear into my suitcase and off we went to the airport to head back to the East Coast. My first day home I decided to sleep in and skip running. But yesterday I felt it was time to get back to hot humid running since i’m now officially training for the NYC Marathon in November and will be logging many icky sticky miles. I started off super speedy….I think I was still on a high from my travels, but the dew point caught up to me. It was 70. I recently learned from this article that a dew point of 70 and above is uncomfortable and you should expect your pace to suffer greatly. So after 2 speedy miles, I plummeted for the last mile. Next up is a 15 mile training run through Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn tomorrow. I’m only scheduled to run a long run of about 7 miles but my running peeps will be there and I REALLY miss them. So I’ll take it easy and slow and shoot for all the miles knowing I might bail early if I feel like I’m about to die. I’ll be sure to post about our run before the weekend is out.

Happy Friday! Question: While running, have you ever been leaf blower schmutz’ed? Have you ever been splashed by a puddle as a car sped through?

Part 2….this is where the 1,645,876 miles of driving come in to play (ok well more like 400 miles).

I left my heart in San Francisco and then it was time to drive down the Pacific Coast Highway and through Big Sur, ultimately arriving in Pismo Beach. Things started off rather smooth. But then there was a little traffic…and then…a little more traffic. Enough traffic to wipe out the 2 hour stop I had planned in Monterey. Lisa and I pulled into the visitor’s center, and took a quick walk to the beach to snap a quick pic, use the restroom and then get back on the road. We joked that we could write a travel book “Monterey Beach in 24 minutes”. I was truly disappointed. But we knew we had to keep to a schedule to arrive in Pismo before dark, and most importantly, not miss our dinner reservations =)

24 minute parking at the visitor’s center. lol!

The next 4 1/2 hours (225 miles) were filled with the most picturesque views and windy roads ever. I have actually never enjoyed driving more. Basically no stoplights or stop signs or cross streets. We took a few pics along the way. Even came across some elephant seals. Oh, and of course now I want to run the Big Sur Marathon! How could I not? They have a strict 6 1/2 hour time limit which sounds like a lot of time but it’s a VERY hilly course. My slowest to date is 5 1/2 so I think I could do it! =)

We got to Pismo Beach just in time for the sunset. Then had one of the most outstanding meals ever. Carne asada nachos to start followed by Halibut fish tacos for the main event. Ventana Grill makes their own corn tortillas right at the restaurant. Dessert for me was raspberry chocolate mousse. Lisa opted for the mocha almond fudge mud pie. AMAZING!

Sunset in Pismo Beach

OK, now that we’ve got that out of the way I can tell you about my lovely run the next morning. I woke up before sunrise. First put on some flip flops and walked down a big flight of stairs to get to the beach. I had my camera and was hoping to get a gorgeous sunrise. But it was cloudy and so nothing really was photo worthy. I returned to the room, swapped my camera and flip flops for my Garmin and my running sneakers and decided I’d just run about 1-2 miles out and then turn back. I wanted to keep this one short so I wouldn’t delay our departure. Also, the weather was a luxurious 59 degrees! I knew it would be refreshing and thought I could make this a speed workout (of sorts). It was my fastest run of the trip. And if it weren’t for a hill toward the end and a few stops to take photos, I’m guessing it would have been even faster. There’s nothing better than unchartered territory! I love running by the beach at home but this run meant that I’d actually be running ON Highway 1. I’m a nerd so that was cool.

1045232_10201479870260349_1898931787_nMy distance ended up being just about a 5K. And that was perfect. Enough to get the endorphins going and sweat out the traffic stress from the day before, but not that long that I’d be spent for the rest of the day. The Cottage Inn where we stayed had a continental breakfast included so I had a hard boiled egg, a waffle and some coffee. From there it was time to hit the road for some more miles (driving AND running). Next stop: Los Angeles. Stay tuned for Part 3…

In the meantime, go here and read The Rescue Baker’s recap of our trip with an emphasis on our dining experiences of course;)

Questions: Do you prefer to run by the beach or in a park with trees?

Hello readers, friends (and as i’m learning….spammers)!
Well, vacation has come to a close. While i am mostly sad that the trip is over, I am super excited to be back home with this clown…

California is so beautiful. From downtown San Francisco to Napa, the Pacific Coast Highway coastal drive to Pismo Beach, and Los Angeles to San Diego, there was just one breathtaking vista after the next. And of course lots of running. I am happy to report I ran 4 of the 6 days! Let’s get started with San Francisco…Valerie, the sister of my friend Lisa, (you know, the one in this video who got me inspired into running in the first place) lives in Sausalito. Her husband was kind enough to come scoop me up at the hotel and and drop us at the Marin side of the Golden Gate Bridge for us to venture out on a 7.5 mile run over the bridge and into San Francisco. He took this shot just before we started.

I have run over bridges before, but this was just stellar. The temps were spot on, the view was amazing, and I finally got to meet Valerie in person. We chatted up a storm. I probably could have run 20 miles. I took a few more pics as we crossed the bridge and a few more once we made it to the other side through Chrissy Field and along the Presidio.

I succeeded in matching my running outfit to the bridge=)

A for effort but my hands were a little too low.

this view isn’t too hard on the eyes

We finished up at the Ferry Building along the Embarcadero and walked up Market Street to a Starbucks and chatted a bit more. What I loved about this run was that pace and distance weren’t important. The conversation and the view took precedence. (Word of Wisdom which I think I’m going to just abbreviate moving forward to W.O.W.: You must do this every now and again. Take the emphasis of a run off of pace and distance and put it onto conversation and surroundings. It’s like renewing your vows. Tee Hee!) Now that’s what you call running on vacation! My post-run “recovery”? A day trip to Napa Valley with my travelmate Lisa (a.k.a. TheRescueBaker who will be blogging about lots of our delicious dinners and desserts in the next few weeks).

And like wine tasting and relaxing on beautiful patios overlooking scenic vineyards wasn’t enough of a post-run treat, we had dinner at this cute place in San Francisco called American Cupcake. We dined on their 3 signature items: Mac and Cheese Cake Pops with Cotton Candy, Candy Apple BBQ Ribs and Red Velvet Fried Chicken…..really a unique pairing of comfort foods and sweets. Oh yeah, and of course we had a couple of cupcakes too. =)

Amazeballs!

Well I better get back to unpacking and such. I’ll be posting about my runs in Pismo Beach and Los Angeles soon. I’ll also be sharing some of the “small stuff” that I sweat out on those runs. Happy Hump Day.

Question: Anyone run or do anything sporty with an amazing view recently? I saw some people parasailing along the coast. I think i’m too chicken for that.

Hope you all enjoyed your July 4th. I kicked off my vacation in San Francisco. Drove down the coast. I’ll be headed home on Tuesday. So until I can bring you up to speed and share some of my vacation running routes here are a few pics.

Happy Sunday!
